Enrichments

We welcome MSD's Elementary students (1st-6th graders) to join Rainbow Club! The Rainbow Club provides students with a safe and supportive place to meet to discuss and explore topics like self identity (including gender identity and expression, race, abilities, and diverse family representation), recognizing similarities and differences, recognizing unfairness, and developing advocacy skills to speak up for themselves, peers, and others. The Rainbow Club uses developmentally appropriate and accessible activities to support discussions around justice, intersectionality, and allyship while supporting students sharing their voice, passions, and lived experiences with their communities. MSD's Rainbow Club will be guided by MSD staff.

This enrichment class is available for 1st-6th graders on one Monday a month from 3-4:30pm. 

Rainbow club is free and open to all MSD and local Elementary students.

Shihhan Seyfried is offering piano lessons to children ages 4 years-6th grade and clarinet lessons to children 3rd grade-6th grade. Shihhan is an active performer and educator. She holds a Bachelor of Music in Performance degree from Aletheia University in Taiwan and a Master of Music Performance from UNCG. She is a dynamic teacher who has the ability to teach a wide range of learners with diverse backgrounds, abilities, and goals.  With a commitment to helping each reach their potential, Shihhan has developed a variety of strategies to engage, inspire, and communicate with young musicians. Music books will be recommended based on the child’s level and ability and are not included in the course fee. Clarinets will not be provided, but stores to rent or purchase an instrument will be recommended upon request. Students will also have the chance to participate in a recital at the end of the semester.

These half-hour lessons are available for 4 year olds - 6th grade on Mondays (3-5pm), Wednesdays and Fridays (3-6pm).

The cost is $520 for Monday lessons and $600 for Wednesday or Friday lessons.

Discover the joy of music with Jeb's beginning guitar/ukulele lessons for Elementary students! Half hour lessons will guide students through the basics of the instrument, picking melodies, understanding rhythm, and strumming chords. Jeb's approach involves discovering the songs your child already loves and teaching them how to play those tunes on the instrument that best suits their age. By connecting with their favorite music, learning becomes engaging and exciting. Through these fun and interactive sessions, students will not only learn the building blocks of music and guitar/ukulele playing, but they will also learn to play the songs that resonate with them. It's the perfect recipe for building a solid musical foundation while nurturing their passion for music. Jeb is one of MSD's music specialists at the Elementary level.

This enrichment class is available for Elementary (1st-6th grade). 

The half-hour lessons are individually scheduled on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:10-5:25pm.

The cost is: $525 for 15 lessons.

Soccer Shots is specially designed for young children as it is a high-energy program introducing them to fundamental soccer principles, such as using your feet, dribbling, and the basic rules of the game. Through fun games, songs, and positive reinforcement, children will begin to experience the joy of playing soccer and being active.

This enrichment class is available for Early Childhood and Kindergarten on Mondays. There are two sessions scheduled this season: 3-4pm and 4:15-5:15pm. 

The cost is $150 for 6 classes.

Fiber Arts have been a part of human civilizations for thousands of years. They help us to stay warm, safe, and comfortable, but they also provide a special way of connecting with the people around us and the Fiber Artists who came before us. In this enrichment, students have the opportunity to improve their current Fiber Arts skills, learn new skills, share their skills and knowledge, and connect with other Fiber Artists. Any Elementary student (1st-6th grade) is welcome to join, whether they’ve been doing fiber arts for years or have never tried them. In the Fiber Circle, we’ll focus on knitting, crocheting, weaving, and sewing. We will provide materials and tools, but students are welcome to bring their own. Sid Sideris, one of MSD’s Lower Elementary Assistant Teachers, will lead this Enrichment.

This enrichment class is available for Elementary children (1st-6th grade) on Mondays from 3:15-4:15pm.

Come stomp, wiggle, move, and jump to find different ways to express the big emotions that children want and need to get out. In our child-led class, each week the children will guide us through the different ways that they express the big emotions that they feel as they learn to listen to their bodies. Participants will learn how to move in ways that are safe for themselves, others, and their surroundings. Our movement class is not focused on dance technique but rather on learning how to express the emotions that are within the self, so that children can feel comfortable and confident accepting, expressing, and releasing emotions through movement. 

This enrichment class is available for Early Childhood and Kindergarten on Tuesdays from 3:15-4:15pm. 

The cost is $175 per class for 7 classes.

Does your child absolutely love art? Do they really enjoy drawing, painting, creating, and constructing? Then this class is perfect for your budding artist! Janine, MSD’s own Elementary Art teacher, is once again offering her popular After School Art Class for Upper Elementary students. This is an advanced class with sophisticated processes and projects with a goal of giving the artists an opportunity to practice skills and learn techniques that go beyond what is covered in weekly art classes. We will work traditionally and experimentally as we cover a variety of art areas including drawing, painting, sculpture, and everyone’s favorite, pottery. This is a fun and exciting class and can take these young artists to the next level of personal expression. 

This enrichment class is available for Upper Elementary (4th-6th grade) on Tuesdays from 3-4:30pm.

The cost is $400 for 10 classes.

Get up close and personal with your eye! What makes you see? How does our brain perceive depth and color? Why do we have blind spots? See your eyes play magic tricks. Activities will include “Do My Eyes Deceive Me?”, Model Eye, Braille Name, Quest for the Safest Glass, A Taste of Virtual Reality, and Beyond! Shelby Jones is the Vice President of Operations for STEM for Kids. She has taught STEM enrichment classes and summer camps at MSD for several years.

This enrichment class is available for Early Childhood and Kindergarten on Wednesdays  from 3:15-4:00pm.

Citizen Naturalists is designed to get students outdoors, exploring the campus’ natural environment and observing the plant and animal species we discover. It is both educational and physical, and will expand students’ understanding of science, nature, and their personal place in the world. We will focus especially on the relationships between living species, how these living things impact their environment, and our human relationship with it all. Students will join Rachel Woods of Dragonfly Nature Programs LLC, to study the natural environment on campus. Most of our experiences will be outdoors, rain or shine, heat or cold. Because nature directs our weekly focus, each class will vary while building on past experiences. Former program participants and new students are both welcome!

This enrichment class is available for Elementary (1st-6th grade) on Wednesdays from 3-4:30pm. 

The cost is $195 for 7 classes.

Come sing, dance, and play with us! Our engaging class environment includes singing, instrument exploration, movement, stories, finger plays, and musical games. It is a lively and happy time as we learn and grow together! Sweet Songs features a whole-child educational approach that focuses on essential school-readiness skills like active listening, social skills, turn-taking, sharing, and self-control, while fostering creative expression and confidence. Children will learn musical terms, strengthen steady beat and pitch recognition, as well as focus on language, literacy, and math skills. Barbra is a certified Kindermusik Educator and has been providing music enrichment at libraries, preschools, childcares, and elementary schools since 2000.

This enrichment class is available for Early Childhood and Kindergarten (ages/grades) on Thursdays from 3:15-4:00pm. 

The cost is $175 for 7 classes.

These classes and workshops will be centered towards the different cultures of the world through music, dance, and art forms. FUN is the focus. Baba McDaniel Roberts is a native of Durham, NC. Currently, he is the Dance Specialist at Murray-Massenburg Elementary School, Artistic Director of The Harambee Collective, Co-Director of Baba's Rising Sons, R.N. Harris Elementary School 2023-24 Beginning Teacher of the Year, and the 2016 Recipient of the Durham Arts Council Emerging Artist Award. 

This enrichment class is available for Elementary students (1st-6th grades) on Thursdays from 3:15-3:45pm. 

The cost is $125 for 5 classes.

The class will focus on Basketball I.Q., Fundamentals & Skill Development through interchangeable drills and games to challenge the individual. The clinics will have fun drills and innovative ways to teach fundamental skills for the beginner and challenge the more experienced player allowing continuous growth. T³LAB is a great opportunity to maintain or start a healthy & active lifestyle for those who are looking to get active and develop a foundation to getting fit in a fun, structured, and supportive environment. We also focus on coordination, agility, leadership, confidence, and positive sportsmanship.

A classic story important to us in Elementary is Stone Soup. The community comes together and realizes that less can become more when we all pitch in. At the center of the Stone Soup Enrichment will be the belief that we have a world of possibilities when it comes to helping each other. This service-oriented enrichment program will consist of lessons about scarcity and need within our community, followed up by activities that spread our kindness into the world. We will learn about urban farming and community gardens, the free libraries and food pantries in our neighborhood, and how kids can become involved in mutual aid. MSD’s Stone Soup Club will be headed by Elim Lee, our Upper Elementary Assistant Teacher.

Join MSD’s veteran Elementary Art Teacher, Janine Wolf, for this multimedia focused art class. We will work both two-dimensionally and three-dimensionally as we cover lessons in drawing, painting, collage, book making, and sculpture. This is a creative and fun class!

Master your engineering skills with Play-Well TEKnologies and tens of thousands of LEGO parts! Apply real-world concepts in physics, engineering, and architecture through engineer-designed projects. Play-Well TEKnologies has been teaching engineering to kids since 1997 in the San Francisco Bay Area. Wendy has a degree in Mechanical Engineering from NC State and has been teaching engineering concepts to children in the Triangle for 10+ years. She is passionate about inspiring a love of science and engineering in future generations.

This enrichment class is available for Early Childhood (4-year olds only) and Kindergarten on Wednesdays  from 3:15-4:00pm.

After “adopting” their very own plush puppy, students will role-play the key responsibilities of a veterinarian, including how to properly perform a nose-to-tail exam. These future veterinarians will learn how to sew stitches, remove ticks, make healthy treats, and vaccinate their dog!
