Enrichments

We welcome MSD's Elementary students (1st-6th graders) to join Rainbow Club! The Rainbow Club provides students with a safe and supportive place to meet to discuss and explore topics like self identity (including gender identity and expression, race, abilities, and diverse family representation), recognizing similarities and differences, recognizing unfairness, and developing advocacy skills to speak up for themselves, peers, and others. The Rainbow Club uses developmentally appropriate and accessible activities to support discussions around justice, intersectionality, and allyship while supporting students sharing their voice, passions, and lived experiences with their communities. MSD's Rainbow Club will be guided by MSD staff.

This enrichment class is available for 1st-6th graders on the second Monday of each month from 3-4:30pm.

Rainbow club is free and open to all MSD and local Elementary students.

Shihhan Seyfried is offering piano lessons to children ages 4-6th grade and clarinet lessons to children 3rd grade-6th grade. Shihhan is an active performer and educator. She holds a Bachelor of Music in Performance degree from Aletheia University in Taiwan and a Master of Music Performance from UNCG. She is a dynamic teacher who has the ability to teach a wide range of learners with diverse backgrounds, abilities, and goals.  With a commitment to helping each reach their potential, Shihhan has developed a variety of strategies to engage, inspire, and communicate with young musicians. Music books will be recommended based on the child’s level and ability and are not included in the course fee. Clarinets will not be provided, but stores to rent or purchase an instrument will be recommended upon request. Students will also have the chance to participate in a recital at the end of the semester.

These half-hour lessons are available for 4 year olds - 6th grade on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. 

The cost is $465 for 11 lessons (Mondays), $505 for 12 lessons (Wednesdays/Fridays)

Discover the joy of music with Jeb's beginning guitar/ukulele lessons for Elementary students! Half hour lessons will guide students through the basics of the instrument, picking melodies, understanding rhythm, and strumming chords. Jeb's approach involves discovering the songs your child already loves and teaching them how to play those tunes on the instrument that best suits their age. By connecting with their favorite music, learning becomes engaging and exciting.

Through these fun and interactive sessions, students will not only learn the building blocks of music and guitar/ukulele playing, but they will also learn to play the songs that resonate with them. It's the perfect recipe for building a solid musical foundation while nurturing their passion for music. Jeb has been an Assistant Teacher, Music & PE specialist, and support staff member at MSD for over a decade.

This enrichment class is available for Elementary (1st-6th grade). The half-hour lessons are individually scheduled on Tuesdays from 3-6pm.

The cost is $420 for 12 classes.

Come stomp, wiggle, move, and jump to find different ways to express the big emotions that children want and need to get out. In our child-led class, each week the children will guide us through the different ways that they express the big emotions that they feel as they learn to listen to their bodies. Participants will learn how to move in ways that are safe for themselves, others, and their surroundings. Our movement class is not focused on dance technique but rather on learning how to express the emotions that are within the self, so that children can feel comfortable and confident accepting, expressing, and releasing emotions through movement. 

This enrichment class is available for Early Childhood and Kindergarten on Mondays from 3:00-3:45pm. 

The cost is $275 per class for 11 classes.

Soccer Shots is specially designed for young children as it is a high-energy program introducing them to fundamental soccer principles, such as using your feet, dribbling, and the basic rules of the game. Through fun games, songs, and positive reinforcement, children will begin to experience the joy of playing soccer and being active.

This enrichment class is available for Early Childhood students on Tuesdays and Fridays. Choose one or both! There are two sessions scheduled this season: 3-3:45pm.

The cost is $300 per class for 12 classes.

Get ready to become a Smart Shopper in this hands-on financial literacy program! Students will dive into the world of money management, learning essential skills like comparing prices, budgeting an allowance, and making informed shopping choices. Through engaging activities like grocery store role-play, students will practice using both cash and digital payments while understanding how taxes affect their purchases. Beyond the checkout line, students will explore real-world financial topics such as bank accounts, loans, and interest repayment plans. They’ll take on challenges like budgeting for a new home and allocating tax money for city projects! By the end of the program, students will have the knowledge and confidence to make smart financial decisions, setting them up for a successful future. Shelby’s STEM enrichments and summer camps are always a hit at MSD! She holds a Bachelor’s of Science from NC State in Science, Technology and Society and has been the VP or Operations at STEM for Kids for over 12 years.

Have you ever wondered how our bodies work, especially our bones? In this fun program, our little scientists will become biomedical engineers and explore the amazing skeletal system! We’ll learn all about our strong bones and bendy joints, and even pretend to fix a “boo-boo” bone! You’ll get to design your very own colorful cast and even make a special helper leg for a toy, just like real engineers do. Let’s explore the super cool ways our bodies move and grow! Shelby’s STEM enrichments and summer camps are always a hit at MSD! She holds a Bachelor’s of Science from NC State in Science, Technology and Society and has been the VP or Operations at STEM for Kids for over 12 years.

Dungeons and Dragons, or D&D, is a table top roleplaying game where you create a character and take on the role of them in a story played out over multiple sessions. The story is mostly a series of encounters and situations that you are walked through by a Dungeon Master (Guild of Adventure’s Jim!). This could be as simple as, can you haggle down the price of this bag of holding? But can be as dire as a fight for your life against an Owlbear. Your outcomes of the game are based on dice rolls which are modified by the character stats you choose! Guild of Adventures works with people in the Triangle, NC area to bring the joy of Dungeons and Dragons to a new generation of players. Whether you are new, returning, or a veteran player, the offerings we have are aimed at enhancing your D&D game, no matter how you play.

This enrichment class is available for 3rd-6th graders on Wednesday from 3:00-4:30pm. 

The cost is $425 for 12 classes.

Come sing, dance, and play with us! Our engaging class environment includes singing, movement, stories, finger plays, and musical games. It is a lively and happy time as we learn and grow together! Sweet Songs features a whole-child educational approach that focuses on essential school-readiness skills like active listening, social skills, turn-taking, sharing, and self-control, while fostering creative expression and confidence. Children will learn musical terms, strengthen steady beat and pitch recognition, as well as focus on language, literacy, and math skills. Barbra is a certified Kindermusik Educator and has been providing music enrichment at libraries, preschools, childcares, and elementary schools since 2000.

This enrichment class is available for Early Childhood/Kindergarten on Thursdays from 3:15-4:00pm.

Fiber Arts have been a part of human civilizations for thousands of years. They help us to stay warm, safe, and comfortable, but they also provide a special way of connecting with the people around us and the Fiber Artists who came before us. In this enrichment, students have the opportunity to improve their current Fiber Arts skills, learn new skills, share their skills and knowledge, and connect with other Fiber Artists. Any Elementary student (1st-6th grade) is welcome to join, whether they’ve been doing fiber arts for years or have never tried them. In the Fiber Circle, we’ll focus on knitting, crocheting, weaving, and sewing. We will provide materials and tools, but students are welcome to bring their own. Sid Sideris, one of MSD’s Lower Elementary Assistant Teachers, will lead this Enrichment.

Master your engineering skills with Wendy from Play-Well TEKnologies and tens of thousands of LEGO parts! Apply real-world concepts in physics, engineering, and architecture through engineer-designed projects. Play-Well TEKnologies has been teaching engineering to kids since 1997 in the San Francisco Bay Area. Wendy has a degree in Mechanical Engineering from NC State and has been teaching engineering concepts to children in the Triangle for 10+ years. She is passionate about inspiring a love of science and engineering in future generations.

This enrichment class is available for Elementary (1st-6th grade) on Fridays from 3:15-4:00pm. 

The cost is $300 for 12 classes.
