Enrichments

We welcome all Elementary students (1st-6th graders) to join MSD's Rainbow Club! The Rainbow Club provides students with a safe and supportive place to meet to discuss and explore topics like self identity (including gender identity and expression, race, abilities, and diverse family representation), recognizing similarities and differences, recognizing unfairness, and developing advocacy skills to speak up for themselves, peers, and others. 

The Rainbow Club uses developmentally appropriate and accessible activities to support discussions around justice, intersectionality, and allyship while supporting students sharing their voice, passions, and lived experiences with their communities. 

MSD's Rainbow Club will be guided by MSD staff and Anne Sutkowi-Hemstreet, the founder and director of Rainbow Collective for Change, who also is an MSD parent! This club is available for Elementary students (1st-6th grade) once a month on Mondays from 3:00-4:30pm. There is no cost associated with being in the Rainbow Club.

MSD is excited to offer a new after school Theater Arts program for Upper Elementary students! Hosted by Jeb Brinkley, the MSD Drama Club is open to all interested Upper Elementary students and will culminate in the Spring with a one-act stage production! Meetings will occur once a week on Wednesdays from 3:00-4:30pm during the Fall and Spring, with a two-week intensive after school rehearsal process Monday-Fridays 3-5:30pm on April 15th-26th culminating with evening performances for MSD families and friends.

During the Fall, the group will develop their instruments and build an ensemble through the use of vocal and physical warm-ups, improvisational games, character building exercises, and scene work! Students will get the opportunity to explore acting and performing in-depth, but will also dabble in elements of scenic design, costume design, lighting, and sound.  By the end of the semester, students will read the script for the Spring production, and acting/technical roles will be decided based on interest, attendance, and the needs of the show!

Starting in January, weekly meetings will shift toward rehearsing and preparing design elements for the production. Each week, different portions of the play will be staged and rehearsed, and time will be allotted for students to make design choices about the set, props, costumes, lights, and sound. Students will be expected to practice and learn their parts at home. After Spring Break, the group will focus more intensely on preparing for their performances at the end of April! Availability Monday-Friday afternoons for two weeks starting April 15th will be mandatory for all performers.  

There is no cost associated with being in the Drama Club. Also note that siblings of Upper Elementary participants may stay in After School at no charge as well during the class.

Soccer Shots is specially designed for young children as it is a high-energy program introducing them to fundamental soccer principles, such as using your feet, dribbling, and the basic rules of the game. Through fun games, songs, and positive reinforcement, children will begin to experience the joy of playing soccer and being active.

This enrichment class is available for Early Childhood (3 years old - Kindergarten) on Mondays from 3:00-4:00pm.

Students learn the art of persuasion and help select debate topics they find interesting. In a public forum debate format, students work in groups and practice their debating skills in a supportive environment, including developing arguments, issuing rebuttals, providing examples, rebuilding their case and summarizing points of view. Young debaters learn to think on their feet and enhance their public-speaking skills, gaining self-confidence in the process.

This enrichment class is available for Upper Elementary (4th-6th grades) on Mondays from 3:00-4:00pm

Let’s sell lemonade! Students become “lemonade entrepreneurs” and learn how to make yummy lemonade and earn money selling it! From designing marketing flyers to estimating profits to experimenting with recipes, students have fun while developing business savvy. As an optional showcase event, students launch their lemonade stand to raise money for a charity they select.

This enrichment class is available for Lower Elementary (1st-3rd grades) on Monday from 3:00-4:00pm

Join Sandra of CHICLE Language Institute for this special After School program! Sandra Bruno is from Argentina and teaches children at CHICLE Language Institute. Through her teaching approach and charisma, she creates a natural learning environment where children have fun learning Spanish and stay motivated. CHICLE’s comprehensive curriculum incorporates all the fundamental skills young children need to succeed in learning foreign languages. Classes will focus on songs, short stories, and monthly projects for hands-on interactive ways to engage and motivate each child.

This enrichment class is available for 4 year olds - Kindergarteners on Tuesdays from 3-4pm. 

The cost is $495 for 15 classes.

Does your child absolutely love art? Do they really enjoy drawing, painting, creating, and constructing? Then this class is perfect for your budding artist! Janine, MSD’s own Elementary Art teacher, is once again offering her popular After School Art Class for Upper Elementary students. This is an advanced class with sophisticated processes and projects with a goal of giving the artists an opportunity to practice skills and learn techniques that go beyond what is covered in weekly art classes. We will work traditionally and experimentally as we cover a variety of art areas including drawing, painting, sculpture, and everyone’s favorite, pottery. This is a fun and exciting class and can take these young artists to the next level of personal expression.

Join MSD’s veteran Elementary Art teacher, Janine Wolf, for this multimedia focused art class. We will work both two-dimensionally and three-dimensionally as we cover lessons in drawing, painting, collage, book making, and sculpture. A creative and fun class! This class will meet for eight weeks in the second half of the spring enrichment season. This enrichment class is available for Lower and Upper Elementary students (1st-6th grade) on Tuesdays from 3:00-4:30pm

Environmental and sustainability practices in schools are an important trend in 21st century education, and research and practice indicates that green schools can save money, improve health, and boost academic achievement. What does it take to go for the Greening? Participants try their hands and minds in designing a sustainable school model. The Perfect Green School! Students will learn how schools conduct sustainability practices as well as schools receive water and electricity, and where waste goes. 

This enrichment class is available for Early Childhood (3 years old - Kindergarten) on Wednesdays from 3:00-3:45pm. 

The cost is $375 for 15 classes.

It is both educational and physical, and will expand students’ understanding of science, nature, and their personal place in the world. We will focus especially on the relationships between living species, how these living things impact their environment and our human relationship with it all. 

Students will join Rachel Woods, owner of Dragonfly Nature Programs LLC, to study the natural environment on campus. Most of our experiences will be outdoors, rain or shine, heat or cold. Because nature directs our weekly focus, each semester’s programming will vary while building on past experiences. Former program participants and new students are both welcome!

This enrichment class is available for Elementary aged students (1st - 6th grade) on Thursdays from 3:00-4:30pm 

The cost is $195 for 7 classes. There are two sessions of 7 classes. Feel free to sign up for one, or both!

Come stomp, wiggle, move, and jump to find different ways to express the big emotions that kids want and need to get out. In our child-led class, each week your kids will guide us through the different ways that they express the big emotions that they feel as they learn to listen to their bodies. Kids will learn how to move in ways that are safe for themselves, others, and their surroundings. Our movement class is not focused on dance technique but rather on learning how to express the emotions that are within the self, so that kids can feel comfortable and confident accepting, expressing, and releasing emotions through movement. Gabrielle Rivero is the Lead Founder and current Chief Movement Officer of Express & Release Therapeutic Dance. Gabby began her dance career in 2005 performing and training in lyrical and hip-hop dance. She started her own non-profit teaching the arts to at-risk youth and researched societal perceptions of the body and movement, earning a Master’s degree in Theology. Her hope is to reduce stress and anxiety and improve well-being, helping folks find hope, healing, and restoration in their bodies through movement.

This Enrichment class is available for Early Childhood (3 years old - Kindergarten) students on Fridays from 3-4pm.

Did you know that the brainpower inside your favorite smart device now houses over a billion transistors? These transistors are the fundamental building blocks of modern electronic devices. Small size yet more functionality has driven the technology roadmaps for electronics. In this program participants explore the world of hardware… electrical and electronic circuits. Program participants learn basic concepts of an electric current, voltage, conduction, resistance while building circuits to do simple tasks like light a bulb, power a fan, make a functioning radio. From there they will look into electronics with transistors and integrated circuits. Note: program is specifically designed for younger students. No soldering! Circuit designs use regular 1.5V batteries. 

This enrichment class is available for Elementary (grades 1st - 6th) on Fridays from 3:00-4:00pm.

Shihhan Seyfried is offering piano lessons to children ages 4-6th grade and clarinet lessons to children 3rd grade-6th grade. Shihhan is an active performer and educator. She holds a Bachelor of Music in Performance degree from Aletheia University in Taiwan and a Master of Music Performance from UNCG. She is a dynamic teacher who has the ability to teach a wide range of learners with diverse backgrounds, abilities, and goals.  With a commitment to helping each reach their potential, Shihhan has developed a variety of strategies to engage, inspire, and communicate with young musicians. Music books will be recommended based on the child’s level and ability and are not included in the course fee. Clarinets will not be provided, but stores to rent or purchase an instrument will be recommended upon request. Students will also have the chance to participate in a recital at the end of the semester.

The half-hour lessons are individually scheduled on Mondays from 3:10-5:10pm and Wednesdays and Fridays from 3:00-6:00pm. The cost is $560 for Mondays (14 lessons) and $600 for Wednesdays and Fridays (15 lessons).

Discover the joy of music with Jeb's beginning guitar/ukulele lessons for Kindergarten - Elementary students! Half hour lessons will guide students through the basics of the instrument, picking melodies, understanding rhythm, and strumming chords. Jeb's approach involves discovering the songs your child already loves and teaching them how to play those tunes on the instrument that best suits their age. By connecting with their favorite music, learning becomes engaging and exciting.

Through these fun and interactive sessions, students will not only learn the building blocks of music and guitar/ukulele playing, but they will also learn to play the songs that resonate with them. It's the perfect recipe for building a solid musical foundation while nurturing their passion for music.
